Historical Background
The image of Jesús de la Entrega (Jesus at His Self-Giving) made its first public appearance in a Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross) on Passion Saturday in 2008. In 2009, the image was dressed in a new tunic and cincture, and on 16 April 2011, José Mazuelos Pérez, Bishop of Asidonia-Jerez, signed the decree canonically establishing the brotherhood as a public association of the faithful.
Since then, the brotherhood has continued to develop its processional and artistic heritage in Guadalcacín. These milestones illustrate how the brotherhood has gradually shaped its religious identity, processional traditions and artistic legacy.
Its current canonical seat is the Parish Church of San Enrique and Santa Teresa, at Plaza Artesanía, 6, 11591 Guadalcacín (Cádiz). From this church, the brotherhood maintains devotion to its patron figures and its close ties with the local parish community. Today, the brotherhood holds its annual procession on Passion Saturday, taking its place among the brotherhoods that make up Holy Week in Jerez. Its foundation, the blessing of its sacred images, subsequent reorganisations, restorations and inaugural processions are all important milestones in understanding the brotherhood’s present-day identity.
Sacred Images and Patron Saints
The image of Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Entrega (Our Father Jesus at His Surrender) was created by the Sevillian religious sculptor José Antonio Navarro Arteaga and blessed on 8 March 2008. The brotherhood also honours María Santísima Reina de los Ángeles (Mary Most Holy, Queen of Angels) and Saint Francis of Assisi.
The brotherhood’s full official name is “Hermandad del Santísimo Sacramento y Cofradía de Nazarenos de Nuestro Señor Jesús Nazareno en su Entrega, María Santísima Reina de los Ángeles y San Francisco de Asís”. This name brings together the sacred dedications that form the basis of its religious worship and reflect the scenes from the Passion of Christ, Marian devotion and the glorification of the saints represented by the brotherhood.
The principal sacred images are the focus of the brotherhood’s devotional life. When they form part of a misterio, a sculptural group depicting a scene from the Passion, they are arranged to convey the corresponding Gospel episode through visual storytelling. The inclusion of saints, apostles and other sacred dedications in the brotherhood’s official name reflects its spiritual heritage and highlights its particular historical or religious connections. Together, these sacred figures form a unified devotional and artistic identity, representing the brotherhood both in its regular religious services and in its annual Holy Week procession.
