EASTER SUNDAY
Brotherhood of the Holy Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. |
Historical Background
The brotherhood was founded on the initiative of Antonio Ruiz Herrero and a group of nine friends and members of Jerez’s brotherhood tradition, who were initially known as “the Nine Brothers of the Resurrection”. Their aim was to complete the full cycle of Holy Week in Jerez, which until then had concluded with the Holy Burial, by adding a public procession celebrating the Risen Christ.
These milestones illustrate how the brotherhood gradually developed its religious identity, processional traditions and artistic heritage. Its current canonical seat is Jerez Cathedral, at Plaza Encarnación, s/n, 11403 Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), from where it maintains devotion to its sacred image and its close ties with the local Church community.
Its current canonical seat is Jerez Cathedral, at Plaza Encarnación, s/n, 11403 Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), from where it maintains devotion to its sacred image and its close ties with the local Church community. Today, the brotherhood makes its annual procession on Easter Sunday, taking its place among the brotherhoods that make up Holy Week in Jerez. Its foundation, the blessing of sacred images, subsequent reorganisations, restorations and inaugural processions are all important milestones in understanding its present-day identity. Over time, the continuity of its religious worship and the preservation of its sacred image have helped strengthen the bonds between successive generations of brotherhood members.
Sacred Image
Resurrección (Our Lord in the Mystery of the Resurrection). Its worship and annual procession are centred on the representation of the Risen Christ, the liturgical and devotional culmination of Holy Week in Jerez. The brotherhood’s full official name is “Hermandad de la Sagrada Resurrección de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo”.
This title expresses the central mystery around which the brotherhood’s religious life is organised: the Resurrection of Christ. The principal sacred image forms the devotional centre of the brotherhood and, as part of the processional misterio, is presented in a composition designed to convey visually the Gospel account of the Resurrection.
In this way, the brotherhood brings the Holy Week cycle in Jerez to its culmination, shifting the focus from the Passion and death of Christ to the joy and hope of His Resurrection. Together, these elements form a distinctive devotional and artistic identity that defines the brotherhood both in its regular religious worship and in its annual Easter Sunday procession.
