GOOD FRIDAY
Venerable Brotherhood and Confraternity of Penitents of the Holy Cross on Mount Calvary and Our Lady of Loreto in Her Solitude. |
Historical Background
Devotion to Our Lady of Loreto is closely associated with the Parish Church of San Pedro and with long-established families of the local parish community. According to the tradition recorded in municipal sources, the image may have been donated to the church by the Dávila family, who were connected with the palace of the Marquesses of Villamarta.
The brotherhood’s subsequent development has been closely linked both to the consolidation of its religious worship and to the preservation and enrichment of the artistic and devotional heritage that defines it today. Its current canonical seat is the Parish Church of San Pedro, at Calle Bizcocheros, 17, 11402 Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), from where it continues to play an active role in the religious life of the local community. The brotherhood makes its annual penitential procession on Good Friday, forming part of Jerez’s traditional Holy Week celebrations.
Its foundation and subsequent reorganisations, the blessing of new sacred images and successive restorations reflect different stages in an enduring tradition of devotion. Together, these milestones illustrate the brotherhood’s evolution from its origins to its present-day form, while preserving the sacred dedications that remain at the heart of its religious identity. This historical journey helps explain the distinctive character with which the brotherhood takes its place today within Holy Week in Jerez.
Sacred Images
Nuestra Señora de Loreto en su Soledad (Our Lady of Loreto in Her Solitude) is an historic Dolorosa, or Sorrowful Virgin, whose precise origins and authorship are not specified in the municipal records.
The brotherhood’s official title also includes the Santa Cruz en el Monte Calvario (Holy Cross on Mount Calvary). Its full official name is “Venerable Hermandad y Cofradía de Nazarenos de la Santa Cruz en el Monte Calvario y Nuestra Señora de Loreto en su Soledad”. Its principal sacred devotions embody the brotherhood’s spiritual identity and provide the religious focus of both its regular worship and its public procession.
Where a misterio, or sculptural group depicting a scene from the Passion of Christ, is present, the image of Jesus is accompanied by other figures that bring the Gospel episode to life. In simpler compositions, attention is focused more directly on the expression and symbolism of the principal sacred image. The image of the Virgin Mary conveys the sorrowful and contemplative dimension associated with her particular dedication, while devotion to the Holy Cross on Mount Calvary broadens the spiritual meaning of the brotherhood as a whole. Together, these elements form a coherent devotional programme that gives the brotherhood a distinctive and immediately recognisable identity within Holy Week in Jerez.
