El Santo Crucifijo

GOOD FRIDAY — EARLY HOURS

Pontifical, Ancient and Venerable Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament and Confraternity of Penitents of the Holy Crucifix of Health and Mary Most Holy of the Incarnation.

Historical Background

The brotherhood is closely associated with the Parish Church of San Miguel and with one of the most outstanding crucified images in Jerez’s religious heritage. Its history combines a centuries-old sacramental tradition with penitential devotion to the Santo Crucifijo de la Salud (Holy Crucifix of Health), maintaining the restrained and solemn character traditionally associated with the early hours of Good Friday.

The brotherhood’s subsequent development has been closely linked both to the consolidation of its religious worship and to the preservation and enrichment of the artistic and devotional heritage that defines it today. Its current canonical seat is the Parish Church of San Miguel, at Plaza San Miguel, s/n, 11403 Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), from where it continues to play an active role in the religious life of the local community. The brotherhood makes its annual penitential procession during the early hours of Good Friday, forming part of Jerez’s traditional Holy Week celebrations.

Its foundation and subsequent reorganisations, the blessing of new sacred images and successive restorations reflect different stages in an enduring tradition of devotion. Together, these milestones illustrate the brotherhood’s evolution from its historic origins to its present-day form, while preserving the sacred dedications that remain at the heart of its religious identity. This historical journey helps explain the distinctive character with which the brotherhood takes its place today within Holy Week in Jerez.

Sacred Images

The Santo Crucifijo de la Salud (Holy Crucifix of Health) was created by the Flemish sculptor José de Arce, who settled and worked in Seville and Jerez. The image depicts Christ in the final moments of His agony on the Cross, with a serene treatment of the body and a loincloth whose dynamic movement is characteristic of the Baroque style. The brotherhood’s principal Marian image is María Santísima de la Encarnación (Mary Most Holy of the Incarnation).

The brotherhood’s full official name is “Pontificia, Antigua y Venerable Hermandad del Santísimo Sacramento y Cofradía de Nazarenos del Santo Crucifijo de la Salud y María Santísima de la Encarnación”. Its principal sacred images embody the brotherhood’s central devotions and provide the religious focus of both its regular worship and its public processions.

Where a misterio, or sculptural group depicting a scene from the Passion of Christ, is present, the image of Jesus is accompanied by other figures that bring the Gospel episode to life. In simpler compositions such as this one, attention is focused more directly on the expression, symbolism and devotional power of the principal image. The image of the Virgin Mary conveys the particular Marian dimension associated with her dedication, while the brotherhood’s sacramental character broadens and deepens its spiritual identity. Together, these elements form a coherent devotional and artistic programme that gives the brotherhood a distinctive and immediately recognisable identity within Holy Week in Jerez.
