HOLY MONDAY
Sacramental Brotherhood of the Most Holy Trinity, Throne of Mercy, and Confraternity of Penitents of the Most Holy Christ of Thirst, Mary Most Holy, Our Refuge, and Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. |
Historical Background
The parish association was established on 29 October 2006, with some of its members coming from an earlier youth association that had organised processions on the Friday of Sorrows. It was formally recognised by the ecclesiastical authorities on 8 December of that same year, within the newly established Parish of San Juan Grande and Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria.
These milestones illustrate how the brotherhood gradually developed its religious identity, processional traditions and artistic heritage. Its current canonical seat is the Parish Church of San Juan Grande and Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, at Calle Arquitecto Hernández Rubio, 38, 11408 Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), from where it maintains devotion to its sacred images and its close ties with the local parish community.
Today, the brotherhood makes its annual procession on Holy Monday, taking its place among the brotherhoods of Holy Week in Jerez. Its foundation, the blessing of sacred images, subsequent reorganisations, restorations and inaugural processions are all important milestones in understanding its present-day identity. Over time, the continuity of its religious worship and the preservation of its sacred images have helped strengthen the bonds between successive generations of brotherhood members.
Sacred Images and Patron Saints
The Santísimo Cristo de la Sed (Most Holy Christ of Thirst) was created by the Huelva-born religious sculptor Elías Rodríguez Picón. Carved from cedar wood and polychromed in oils, the image depicts Christ alive on the Cross as He utters the fifth of His Seven Last Words: “I thirst.”
The brotherhood’s principal Marian dedication is Amparo de María Santísima (Mary Most Holy, Our Refuge). Its full official name is “Hermandad Sacramental de la Santísima Trinidad Trono de Misericordia y Cofradía de Nazarenos del Santísimo Cristo de la Sed, Amparo de María Santísima y Beata Teresa de Calcuta”. This title brings together the sacred dedications that form the basis of the brotherhood’s religious worship and reflect the Passion of Christ, Marian devotion and the veneration of the saints associated with the brotherhood.
The principal sacred images form the devotional centre of the brotherhood. When they are part of a misterio, or sculptural group depicting a scene from the Passion, they are arranged to convey the corresponding Gospel episode through visual storytelling. The inclusion of saints, apostles and other sacred dedications within the brotherhood’s official title completes its spiritual programme and highlights its particular historical or charismatic links.
