La Defensión

HOLY TUESDAY

Royal and Franciscan Brotherhood of the Most Holy Christ of Defence, Mary Most Holy of the O and Saint Bruno.

Historical Background

The earliest attempts to establish the brotherhood date back to the late 1920s. After several unsuccessful initiatives, the return of the Capuchin friars in 1953 revived the project and, on 6 July 1957, the decree of canonical erection was finally signed. The brotherhood’s statutes were approved on 30 October of that same year.

These developments reflect a gradual process of consolidation in which parish life, religious worship and the brotherhood’s public presence have reinforced one another. Its current canonical seat is the Convent Church of the Capuchin Fathers, at Calle Sevilla, 53, 11402 Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), which remains the focal point of its religious services and devotional activities.

The brotherhood makes its annual penitential procession on Holy Tuesday, as part of the Holy Week celebrations in Jerez. Its history also highlights the importance of its principal sacred images and the successive conservation and restoration efforts that have helped preserve its distinctive identity. The history of the brotherhood can therefore be understood as a combination of religious devotion, institutional continuity and adaptation to the changing circumstances of each period.

Sacred Images and Patron Saints

The Santísimo Cristo de la Defensión (Most Holy Christ of Defence) was created by José Esteve y Bonet in 1795. It is a Neoclassical sculpture of the crucified Christ, distinguished by its profound sense of serenity. María Santísima de la O (Mary Most Holy of the O, traditionally associated with the Expectation of the Virgin Mary) was created by Luis Álvarez Duarte and blessed in 1971. Since 1992, the image has once again taken part regularly in the procession beneath a palio, an elaborate embroidered canopy supported by decorated poles.

The brotherhood’s full official name is “Real y Franciscana Hermandad del Santísimo Cristo de la Defensión, María Santísima de la O y San Bruno”. This title brings together the different devotions that form the basis of the brotherhood’s religious life and reflects the particular role each plays within its spiritual identity.

The images of Christ and the Virgin Mary traditionally form the focus of contemplation on the Passion and the mysteries of Christ, while the brotherhood’s other sacred dedications complement its spiritual heritage. The artists responsible for these sculptures, their dates of creation, historical attributions and subsequent restorations help place them within Jerez’s rich tradition of religious processional sculpture and contribute to their distinctive artistic character. The continued veneration of these sacred images preserves the brotherhood’s collective memory and provides a lasting focus of devotion for its members and devotees throughout the year.
