Los Judíos de San Mateo

HOLY TUESDAY

Venerable and Royal Sacramental Brotherhood and Archconfraternity of Silence of Our Father and Lord of Sorrows, Mary Most Holy of Desolation, Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Blaise.

Historical Background

The brotherhood is deeply rooted in the historic Church of San Mateo and in a penitential tradition characterised by silence and solemnity. Over the course of its history, it has undergone various periods of reorganisation and revival, while preserving an important devotional and artistic heritage centred on the sacred titles of “Las Penas” and “El Desconsuelo”.

These milestones illustrate how the brotherhood gradually shaped its religious identity, processional traditions and artistic heritage. Its current canonical seat is the Church of San Mateo, at Calle Almendrillo, 7–11, 11408 Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), from where it maintains devotion to its sacred images and its close ties with the local parish community.

Today, the brotherhood makes its annual penitential procession on Holy Tuesday, taking its place among the brotherhoods of Holy Week in Jerez. Its foundation, blessings, reorganisations, restorations and inaugural processions mark, at each stage, key points of reference for understanding its present-day character. Over time, the continuity of its religious worship and the preservation of its sacred images have helped strengthen the bonds between successive generations of brotherhood members.

Sacred Images and Patron Saints

Nuestro Padre y Señor de las Penas (Our Father and Lord of Sorrows) is an anonymous fully carved sculpture traditionally attributed to Ignacio López, an artist associated with the circle of the Roldán family. The brotherhood’s principal Marian image is María Santísima del Desconsuelo (Mary Most Holy of Desolation). Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Blaise complete its sacred dedications.

The brotherhood’s full official name is “Venerable y Real Hermandad Sacramental y Archicofradía del Silencio de Nuestro Padre y Señor de las Penas, María Santísima del Desconsuelo, San Juan Evangelista y San Blas”. This title brings together the sacred dedications that shape the brotherhood’s religious worship and reflect the Passion of Christ, Marian devotion and the veneration of the saints associated with the brotherhood.

The principal sacred images form the devotional centre of the brotherhood. When they are part of a “misterio”, or sculptural group depicting a scene from the Passion, they are arranged to convey the corresponding Gospel episode through visual storytelling. The inclusion of saints, apostles and other sacred dedications within the brotherhood’s official title completes its spiritual programme and highlights its particular historical or religious associations. Together, these sacred figures form a unified devotional and artistic identity, representing the brotherhood both in its regular religious worship and in its annual Holy Week procession.
