Humildad y Paciencia

MAUNDY THURSDAY

Trinitarian Brotherhood and Confraternity of Penitents of the Most Holy Christ of Humility and Patience, Our Lady of the Trinity, Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Anthony the Abbot.

Historical Background

Devotion to the Santísimo Cristo de la Humildad y Paciencia (Most Holy Christ of Humility and Patience) has been documented at the Church of the Holy Trinity since the mid-17th century. The present-day brotherhood, whose identity is closely linked to the Trinitarian tradition, has revived and renewed this historic devotion, structuring its religious life around the church and its principal sacred images.

The brotherhood’s subsequent development has been closely linked both to the consolidation of its religious worship and to the creation and preservation of the artistic and devotional heritage that defines it today. Its current canonical seat is the Church of the Holy Trinity, at Plaza de las Angustias, 3, 11402 Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), from where it continues to play an active role in the religious life of the local community. The brotherhood makes its annual penitential procession on Maundy Thursday, forming part of Jerez’s traditional Holy Week celebrations.

Its foundation and subsequent development, the blessing of new sacred images and successive restorations reflect different stages in an unbroken tradition of devotion. Together, these milestones illustrate the brotherhood’s evolution from its historic origins to its present-day form, while preserving the sacred dedications that remain at the heart of its religious identity. This historical journey helps explain the distinctive character with which the brotherhood takes its place today within Holy Week in Jerez.

Sacred Images and Patron Saints

The Santísimo Cristo de la Humildad y Paciencia (Most Holy Christ of Humility and Patience) is a 17th-century sculpture, documented at the Church of the Holy Trinity since at least 1652 and stylistically associated with the artistic circle of Francisco de Villegas. The brotherhood’s principal Marian image is Nuestra Señora de la Trinidad (Our Lady of the Trinity).

Its full official name is “Trinitaria Hermandad y Cofradía de Nazarenos del Santísimo Cristo de la Humildad y Paciencia, Nuestra Señora de la Trinidad, San Juan Evangelista y San Antonio Abad”. Its principal sacred images embody the brotherhood’s central devotions and provide the religious focus of both its regular worship and its public processions.

Where a misterio, or sculptural group depicting a scene from the Passion of Christ, is present, the image of Jesus is accompanied by other figures that bring the Gospel episode to life. In simpler compositions, attention is focused more directly on the expression and symbolism of the principal image. The image of the Virgin Mary conveys the particular Marian dimension associated with her dedication, while Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Anthony the Abbot broaden the spiritual meaning of the brotherhood’s devotional identity. Together, these elements form a coherent devotional and artistic programme that gives the brotherhood a distinctive and immediately recognisable identity within Holy Week in Jerez.
