PALM SUNDAY
| Brotherhood and Confraternity of Penitents of Our Father Jesus of the Passion, the Denials and Tears of Saint Peter, the Sorrow of Mary, Mother of the Church, and Saint Angela of the Cross. |
Historical Background
The brotherhood originated from a group of young members of the Holy Week brotherhoods who began meeting in Plaza Bornos, in the neighbourhood of La Granja, in 1999. Its earliest processions were organised as youth and parish activities.
In 2001, the brotherhood commissioned the image of Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Pasión (Our Father Jesus of the Passion) from the religious sculptor Antonio Jesús Dubé Verdugo, marking the beginning of a period of consolidation within the local parish community. These milestones illustrate how the brotherhood gradually developed its religious identity, processional traditions and artistic heritage.
Its current canonical seat is the Santa Ángela de la Cruz Parish Centre, which belongs to the Parish of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows), at Calle Playa del Rompidillo, 11406 Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz). From this centre, the brotherhood maintains devotion to its principal sacred images and its close ties with the local parish community. Today, the brotherhood makes its annual procession on Palm Sunday, taking its place among the brotherhoods that make up Holy Week in Jerez. Its foundation, the blessing of sacred images, subsequent reorganisations, restorations and inaugural processions are all important milestones in understanding the brotherhood’s present-day identity.
Sacred Images and Patron Saints
The image of Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Pasión (Our Father Jesus of the Passion) was commissioned in 2001 from the religious sculptor Antonio Jesús Dubé Verdugo. The brotherhood’s official title also includes the Denials and Tears of Saint Peter, the Sorrow of Mary, Mother of the Church, and Saint Angela of the Cross.
Its full official name is “Hermandad y Cofradía de Nazarenos de Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Pasión, Negaciones y Lágrimas de San Pedro, Angustia de María Madre de la Iglesia, y Santa Ángela de la Cruz”. This name brings together the sacred dedications that form the basis of its religious worship and reflect the scenes from the Passion of Christ, Marian devotion and the veneration of the saints associated with the brotherhood.
The principal sacred images are the focus of the brotherhood’s devotional life. When they form part of a misterio, a sculptural group depicting a scene from the Passion, they are arranged to convey the corresponding Gospel episode through visual storytelling. The inclusion of saints, apostles and other sacred dedications in the brotherhood’s official name reflects its spiritual heritage and highlights its particular historical or religious connections. Together, these sacred figures form a unified devotional and artistic identity, representing the brotherhood both in its regular religious services and in its annual Holy Week procession
