GOOD FRIDAY — EARLY HOURS
| Royal Brotherhood and Confraternity of Penitents of Our Father Jesus of the Sentence and Humility, the Most Holy Christ of La Yedra, Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Hope Crowned. |
Historical Background
The brotherhood is deeply rooted in the historic La Plazuela neighbourhood and in its Chapel of La Yedra. During the 20th century, the brotherhood established the present-day configuration of its principal sacred images, particularly following the arrival of Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Sentencia in 1948 and its first penitential procession in 1949.
These milestones illustrate how the brotherhood gradually developed its religious identity, processional traditions and artistic heritage. Its current canonical seat is the Chapel of La Yedra, at Calle Sol, 70, 11401 Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), from where it maintains devotion to its sacred images and its close ties with the local community.
Today, the brotherhood makes its annual penitential procession during the early hours of Good Friday, taking its place among the brotherhoods of Holy Week in Jerez. Its foundation, the blessing of sacred images, subsequent reorganisations, restorations and inaugural processions are all important milestones in understanding its present-day identity. Over time, the continuity of its religious worship and the preservation of its sacred images have helped strengthen the bonds between successive generations of brotherhood members.
Sacred Images
Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Sentencia (Our Father Jesus at His Sentencing) was created by Carmelo Vicent Suria and delivered to the brotherhood and blessed in 1948. The brotherhood’s other principal sacred images are the Santísimo Cristo de la Yedra (Most Holy Christ of La Yedra), Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary) and Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza Coronada (Our Lady of Hope Crowned).
This title brings together the sacred dedications that shape the brotherhood’s religious worship and reflect the Passion of Christ, Marian devotion and the distinctive spiritual identity of the corporation.
The principal sacred images form the devotional centre of the brotherhood. When they form part of a misterio, or sculptural group depicting a scene from the Passion, they are arranged to convey the corresponding Gospel episode through visual storytelling. The brotherhood’s Marian devotions to Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Hope Crowned broaden the spiritual meaning of the ensemble and form an essential part of its devotional identity. Together, these sacred images form a unified devotional and artistic identity, representing the brotherhood both in its regular religious worship and in its annual Holy Week procession.
